Writing Summaries Craftivity is a great hands on, creative way for your students to work on their summarizing skills. Included in this activity are 5 different non-fiction reading passages, anchor charts for using MIWs (Most Important Words) and for writing summaries, and a fun and easy craftivity for your students to make with their summaries.
Reading passage topics included are: 1. Origination of bubble gum (included on the anchor chart – MIWs are chosen, so this could be a great way to write a summary together as a class) 2. How clouds help predict the weather 3. Frogs 4. Comparing baleen and toothed whales 5. Dolphins
Students will write their summaries on fun lemonade glasses and add a wedge to the rims with their MIWs. Some students may wish to make the lemon a lime, or color the glasses as iced tea instead of lemonade. These craftivities make a great bulletin board, hallway display or interactive journal addition. Lemonade glasses come in 2 sizes – whole page or half page – for you to use. And to make this “easy squeezy” for you, I’ve included a rubric to help you score your students’ summaries (rubric scores both content of summaries and mechanics)
As always, happy teaching! - Martha from “The Owl Spot”

Hi! Thanks for dropping in! I love what I do, and am so excited to share my products with you! I have been teaching for 14 years, all in grades 1-5. This year, I've had the unique opportunity to teach a section of 7th grade Reading Comprehension and English. I was a bit unsure when I began, but absolutely love it now. Let's see, I have my Master's degree in Elementary Education with a focus in reading, as well as my National Boards Certification in Middle Childhood Generalist. I'm a teacher consultant with the National Writing Project. My products all represent my perspective of education: engaging, rigorous and fun!
