Math Workshop - Telling Time and Elapsed Time Unit. This is a guided math - math workshop unit plan to teach third grade students to tell time to the nearest minute, along with strategies for elapsed time, reading schedules, and determining the unknown time.
In this product you will find a pretest and post test, vocabulary cards that can be used for a word wall, anchor charts, and detailed mini-lessons along with the resources necessary to carry them out (games, worksheets, anchor charts, and other printables). For each lesson I have provided activities for remediation and enrichment so that you can differentiate your lessons and meet the needs of all your students. Additionally some lessons provide choices as to how you would like to implement them.
It is at your discretion as to how you work through this unit. You can pick and choose lessons as needed or parts of lessons. You can also decide to teach the remediation or enrichment piece whole class as a regular lesson. These are merely a suggestion of how I would pace in my classroom. Further, it is not necessary to follow the “scripted” portion of my lesson plans, but rather that is there to give you an idea of the workshop language used. However, the scripted portion does make it incredibly easy on you when you have a substitute! You are welcome to modify it to your classroom needs. Lastly, you may wish to modify the timing of the workshop or implement centers during independent time. You know your students best and should focus on their needs. You do not need to teach the workshop model to use these lesson plans and they are easily adaptable. You may add, delete, or modify lessons based on your needs.
While I recommend printing in color and laminating materials for repeated future use, it is not necessary. These materials print just fine in grayscale.
This unit begins with a pretest to help you target specifically what your students need. The first lesson reviews the second grade standards of telling time to the nearest five minutes and then focuses on telling time to the nearest minute. Students will learn terminology such as half past, quarter to, quarter after, and so on. Further the unit focuses on what elapsed time is, finding elapsed time through various strategies such as using a T-Chart, the Zoom Strategies, using a number line, and using the Mountain method. Then students will practice problems solving skills to determine how to find time with missing components and using schedules. The unit wraps up with a post test.
