How to Enhance History Lessons with Exciting Stories & Art Projects
This mama of 2 believes that history should be fun and not hard to teach! Here's how she easily adds fun to a history lesson.
Let's face it. History should be exciting to learn but there is nothing more boring and less appealing than a textbook filled with facts to be memorized and stories that we can't really wrap our heads around. History Unboxed is unlike any history program I have ever seen. It is a multi-sensorial program that appeals to different styles of learning. This program mixes history and art together - and is delivered right to your doorstep. It is convenient and so much fun to use!
Make History Lessons Fun, Memorable, and Easy to Teach
History should be fun and not hard to teach!
Each monthly box from History Unboxed comes with a story and artsy, hands-on activities for kids. When your kids settle down and do these activities, they will learn about different times in history. History Unboxed is an exciting, creative, and engaging program to bring history alive to our kids' minds. It is a guaranteed way to make your kids beg to learn more. If you don't believe me, watch my kids' video review here.
This history kit was a hit with my 8-year son who loves action figures and adventurous stories, and with my 6-year-old daughter who loves creating art projects.
Easy Ways to Draw Lessons from History Unboxed
These subscription kits can easily transform into unit studies. Both homeschoolers and teachers love unit studies that we can break into several lessons and we also love done-for-us lessons! ;) History Unboxed takes the guessing factor of what's next in our lesson plans and gives us great content and resources to teach our children. It saves us time and guarantees our students will love it, will participate in the lessons and will also retain what they learned! Plus is fun, hands-on, it covers several subjects not just history, not just art. It's convenient! It comes to our doors every month.
My kids and I just finished using the Alexander The Great kit from History Unboxed - here are a few ideas on how to use it:
-The guide begins with an overview of the life and conquers of Alexander the Great this is where history and a bit of Greek mythology meet (language arts opportunity here: ask your children to narrate the stories back to you or ask them to write about it).
-Learn about the advances in medicine during Alexander's empire (science discussions here!).
-Observe the beautiful pictures of paintings and sculptures of Alexander the Great and his battles included in the guide for some art appreciation and picture studies!
-The one page on greeting costumes during Alexander's days is a great opportunity to teach your kids about different customs and traditions for greeting each other in different places of the world and even do some little lesson on manners!
-The kit came with a beautiful map and watercolors to paint it plus the comic coloring sheet and these are great for an art lesson.
-At the very end of the guide, there is a list of suggested readings by age groups. Take the list to your local library and borrow some of the books to read aloud to your children.
What's included in the welcome kit?
When you first sign up for History Unboxed, your child will receive a welcome box from a time traveling brother and sister duo Zane and Ava. The welcome box includes:
- An interactive timeline
- A welcome coloring comic strip (for ages 5-9) or a welcome detailed coloring page and introductory letter from Ava (for ages 10-15)
- A Time Capsule kit to create your own historic memento
- Additional introductory materials to use during your History Unboxed Subscription
Zane and Ava magically travel through time, and their adventures will present the time period to your child through the activities in the box. Each month will feature a different time and place in the ancient world with hands-on crafts, activities, and art so that your child can learn about history in a memorable and exciting way. We've been having such a great time going through Alexander The Great's lesson from History Unboxed for 5 to 9 years old, perfect for my children ages 4 (almost 5), 6 and 8. History Unboxed has also the same kit geared for 10 to 15 years old students.
Who is History Unboxed for?
History Unboxed is perfect for any family that wants to get kids more involved in studying history. There are three different options:
- ages 5-9 (Kindergarten to 3rd grade)
- ages 10-15 (4th to high school)
- 16+ - for adults who want a monthly history fix as well.
