PB&J Word Play – Practicing With Onsets and Rimes

This Peanut Butter and Jelly themed literacy center has students combine onset and rimes to make words and decide if they are real words or nonsense words.
An onset is the consonant(s) before the vowel(s) in a syllable: c in cat, b in back.
A rime (phonogram) is the first vowel in a syllable and whatever follows: at in cat, ack in back.
They can be used to teach children to decode by analogy by using a word they already know to figure out a word they don’t know.
About 500 easy to read, high frequency words can be derived from the 37 most common rimes.

The product includes:
The 37 most common rimes
All initial consonant onsets
Some of the most common consonant blends and consonant clusters
Blank peanut butter and jelly images for you to modify to meet your needs
