Note: The product is more advanced than my orginial Finding the Main Idea with Non-Fiction Texts. The main idea is NOT always found in the first sentence. This product comes with 20 different non-fiction winter passages that students can use to practice finding the main idea and supporting details. All answer keys are included!

Depending on how much your student(s) know about finding the main idea will depend on how you use these non-fiction reading passages. Third grade students (ages 8-9) may need modeling of the activity before completing one on their own. Fourth grade students (ages 9-10) should easily be able to find the main idea and supporting details after a brief introduction. Fifth grade students (ages 10-11) could use these passage to review previous skills on finding the main idea and supporting details.
Students not only have to be able to determine the main idea and supporting details, but they also need to be able to summarize text. Once students have completed one of these activities, you could have them use their web including the main idea and three supporting details to write a summary of the text.
These are also a great assessment tool!
