Nonsense Words with CVC word pattern. Nonsense Words from Nita Marie's Classroom Creations Nonsense Words. ?!?! Yes, I AM posting word cards with make believe words on them. Nonsense words are words that aren’t real. I’ve read some of the rationale on the internet for using nonsense words. One of the things I found is that teachers are using nonsense words as way to practice and assess the phonics skills that they have taught. One site said mentioned that using nonsense words takes the pressure off of figuring out the meaning. Another rationale is that nonsense words helps the students with syllabication of longer words. When they get to the longer words with multiple syllables, they will have an easier time decoding them if they are fluent in nonsense words. The DIBELS assessment (which our district uses) includes assessments for nonsense words … especially in the lower grades.
One of the disadvantages of nonsense words is that it takes a while to make them up. So I did that for you. In this packet I have included 57 word cards with the CVC pattern. I have tried used all of the short words and I also tried to use a large variety of the other letters.
Since our school administrators want our students practicing nonsense words in our Intervention Classes, I plan on making additional packets for other letter an syllable patterns. Please follow me to stay updated.
Thanks, Nita Marie
