New to Life of Fred books? Here's everything you need to know: Change the Way Kids Learn Math – Use the Life of Fred Books

Description

Life of Fred is a series of math books that break of the old pattern of drill and kill. Instead of nothing but dry exposition and endless drill exercises, they contain fun stories about Fred Gauss, a child prodigy math genius. During his hilarious adventures, he encounters situations that call for solving math problems. Children actually want to read these books.

The stories carry on through the exercises, leading the student through them. Many of the books have a series of quizzes called Bridges every few chapters. Passing a quiz means the student is ready for the next chapter. Some books have all the problem solutions in them, while others have separate answer keys or companions.

I have an 11 year old girl who has been public schooled but has not retained much at all. She is very bright and artistic, and has a good sense of numbers....its the math that stumps her. She seems stuck in basic addition. Can not tell time correctly, and she is concerned about her ability to count money. and I asked her to subtract tonight, and she said she forgot how. We are able to home school now. Can you tell me which book (s) to start with?
Asked by a Parent and Super-hero on November 12th, 2016 (Edited)

Life of Fred books are not as linear as the typical "drill and kill" approach. Where you start may depend on your student's needs. Please click on the Sample link next to each book to see examples.

I have a third grader who needs more help with multiplication and division. He is new to this series. Where (what book) should he start?
Asked by a Homeschooler on October 30th, 2016 (Edited)

We recommend that 3rd grade students start around Goldfish. However, every child is different. Please click on the above sample texts (next to each book name) to make sure that it's appropriate for your student.

  • It's school work with a bit of humor.
    Feb 09, 2017

I have 3 children ages 9, 10, and 11 who I bought this for. The box arrived and they were kind of dissapointed it was school books. We read the first three chapters of "Apples". It was NOT at all a math book, at least not what we think a math book should be. They all laughed afterwords when it showed 3+4=7. Because it was a cute story that ended with a simple math problem that they all knew already. They enjoyed the story and I found my 11 year old picking up one of the other books and reading it. I like the simplicity in the books and how it goes through different subjects that my children NEED to know, like days of the week and the calendar months. Along with history and things about math that weren't taught in my math class.

  • Loving them!
    Feb 08, 2017

My 5 and 7 year old boys are loving the stories and think Fred is hilarious! Definitely glad we purchased them. We only purchased the 1st three at first, but ordered the remaining ones through 2nd grade after we got into the 1st book, Apples. I have a feeling we'll be flying through math this year! Thank you!!!

  • 7 year old son LOVES them!
    Feb 08, 2017

My son loves to read and he really likes math. He read the first book in two days and started the second one. The next day I saw he used his sisters bathtub crayons to draw the characters on the bathtub walls. I love how they incorporate so many facts and other subjects into the books. The book taught him the word deciduous. I don't know any other first graders that use that word. These books are great! We will definitely use the whole series.

  • Works well and is funny
    Feb 01, 2017

My son has never liked reading or math but recently, he has started enjoying reading funny stories. He is in the 6th grade but is working on 3rd grade math. We started with Apples and are planning on working through all of the books. He can't wait to get to Calculus :) He gets up in the morning and reads his chapter without having to be asked and writes out the answers to the questions. He also asked when he "got" to start the Life of Fred Language Arts :)
