In this mini lesson, students will learn about conductive materials that they can use to complete a circuit. This will give students a brief, hands-on introduction to electricity. Before teaching the lesson, the instructor may want to brush up on a few electricity basics: • Electricity is when particles like electrons flow through a conductive material, like copper. • A conductor is something that allows electrons to move freely. Copper is a good conductor because it holds only 1 electron in its outermost shell, which has a capacity of 32. That electron is not bound very tightly to the atom, so it is more likely to respond to electrical energy. common misconceptions students may have: • The batteries don’t create electricity, the electrically charged particles are already there. They provide a source of energy to get the electrons flowing. • An electric current is the flow of charge. The charges do not disappear when the circuit is broken, or the “current stops flowing”. • Ben Franklin’s kite did NOT get stuck by lightning. He would have died. He also didn’t “discover” electric- ity.

  • 1 LED per student
  • 1 coin battery per student
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Various materials to test, such as paper clips, foil, playdough, and various metal, plastic, glass, and wood-en objects.
  • Voltmeter (optional)
