This unit takes a fun approach to this journal-style novel. Students take on the role of Miss Stretchberry, Jack's middle grades teacher by inferring and writing responses to Jack from her perspective.

Summary of Hate That Cat: Jack continues on his quest to write and love poetry. In addition, with help from his teacher, Miss Stretchberry, Jack also overcomes harsh feelings about a neighborhood cat and learns to accept the idea of having a pet again. Through some twists and turns Jack realizes that he is a true poet that is able to express emotion through his poetic words to even his hearing impaired mother. A must read for the middle to upper elementary grades.
