Product Description

"It teaches you to read-really fast!" - Hugh B. Age, 6

Children love discovering how reading works with this friendly and kinesthetic  8"x 10" vinyl  board that visually shows how reading works!

By moving the letter selectors, a simple 3-letter word shows in a window.  Letters of the alphabet along with visual pronunciation prompts are at the ready for quick reference.  .

It teaches:

letter recognition and sounds,

the importance of vowels-

consonants,

rhyming,.

the 'magic e' ,

double-letter long vowels,

consonant blends and more

Consonant blends are learned easily by simply adding a letter-- written on a small piece of paper-- to the beginning and/or end of a 3-letter word in the window,.  Example: by adding a 'b' to the beginning of the word 'ran' in the window and a 'd ' to the end, 'ran' becomes 'brand'

Except for the printing on vinyl, this is a hand-crafted item.

It is best  used as a companion to an easy reader.  Patent  pending.

Kids Ask to Use the Board Every Day
    Jul 09, 2017

I’ve used the reading machine successfully with Title I kindergarten and first grade students. When the kindergarten students learned a new consonant, we combined it with a vowel for blending…like a ma, ba,ca,fa, etc. It’s faster than flash cards and the students would ask for it every day!
With first grade, as they learn new vowel sounds, I can control the middle vowel to change words from “mit” to “mot” to “mat” or add a final “e” to make mate. Students are motivated when they can make the new words for themselves.

Perfect Tool For Helping Children to Read
    Jul 09, 2017

I have been using the Reading Machine for the last four years in my Title I classroom. I have found it to be an invaluable tool for introducing children to reading. They beg to use the “Reading Machines”. The bright, kinesthetic machine promotes good blending and concept development. It can be expanded to consonant blends, plurals and long-vowels which children have difficulties learning. Sometimes I challenge them to partner and have them create words for each other. It’s a perfect tool for helping children to read.

Grandma Bean's Reading Machine is the name my grandchildren gave my reading board. My name is really Liz Bishop and I'm a 73 year-old grandmother.  The idea for the board came to me years ago while working with struggling readers and believing that what these children needed was a visual that showed how reading works.  With that thought, I went to work and made my first boards from poster board, markers and paper fasteners.  The children loved them---- and found reading success through discovery!  Now in my old age I want  to help ensure that all children become successful readers.  I did the art and had them printed at our local print shop; my company is still located in the dining room.  It is patent pending. Other products I'm offering also encourage learning through discovery.
