Problem: Students have a lot of work to go home with parents at Open House or at the end of the school year. Our school has an art folder for every child. I realized after my own children went through elementary school that these folders were often the only work saved from the year.
Solution: I wanted these folders to not only to hold work, but also hold memories of favorite moments from the school year. I have my students make self-portraits of their heads and shoulders. Some years I have them do a torn paper collage; some years it is just drawn and cut out. This year I had a lot of scrapbook paper, so that’s what we used.
Students then filled out thought bubbles about the year. I asked them to make 4-5 thought bubbles. I gave them prompts and encouraged them to expand on the memories they choose. I remind them that when they grow up, they won’t remember the details.
This project is great for many grade levels!
