5th grade is a culminating year for many students. It marks the end of the elementary school years. Although students continue to develop higher level thinking skills they are also using knowledge and skills from multiple content areas in order to solve problems, analyze situations and respond to the world around them. By the end of the 5th grade year, students should show mastery of the key skills and concepts covered in the elementary school years. This is a great time to use best-selling lessons and activities to fill in any learning gaps or refine skills that need a little more practice. Students leaving the 5th grade should be able to read and respond to a text, use an appropriate vocabulary in their speaking and writing, write an organized paper involving multiple paragraphs, show proficiency in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and solve complex math problems using multiple steps.
