This packet of main idea activities and printables is designed to help your students grasp main idea in non-fiction texts. This activity pack takes a whole new approach to learning main idea, starting with pictures and then moving into text.
Originally developed for my ESOL students, these activities are ideal for mainstream or ESOL classrooms. I have used these activities to teach and review main idea in grades 2-8. These activities are aligned with CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.2, and also meet standards for CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.2 and CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.2.
After completing these activities, your students will be more than ready to tackle main idea in grade-level texts. I start my students out with these activities, then move to paragraph level, and finally a full, grade-level appropriate article using the organizers included.

I am currently an ESOL coach for my district, working with both ESOL and mainstream teachers to help them differentiate and improve the quality of their instruction for English language learners. I currently work in Maryland, but spent several years teaching in North Carolina, and I completed my student teaching in Tennessee as well. During my career, I have worked with students in grades K-8, though most of my attention has been focused on the upper grades, 4-8. I have been invited to Busan, S. Korea, twice to conduct 2 week teacher training seminars on Content Based English Instruction for English language learners, and I am SIOP trained. In addition, I also lead numerous Continuing Professional Development courses, workshops, and focus groups for teachers in my district. In addition to my MS, I also have a BA degree in Spanish and Mass Communications.
