These student-sized PHONEMIC CARDS will make it easier for you teach your children to decode and read. Where the PHONEMIC POSTERS are helpful for teaching an entire class, these student-sized cards are perfect for independent work.
They cover the 34 vowel and consonant phonemes* shown in the THUMBNAILS. Each card represents a phoneme graphically and depicts the “sound pictures” or letter combinations that make the sound. The sound pictures are listed in order, from the most common to the rare spellings. For your reference, the charts in the PREVIEW provide sample words for each “sound picture”. These sample words are also formatted for you to print on the backs of each PHONEMIC STUDENT CARD.
Because pronunciation of words and sounds varies considerably from region to region of the country, you may find that some of the words on the charts don’t match your pronunciation of them. I have referred to the Oxford Dictionary to confirm the pronunciation of the sample words. You are welcome, however, to explain to your students that some people say the sound as it is presented in the chart. Also, please note that the rare spellings, presented last in each box on the charts and posters, are included to help older students and do not need to be presented to new readers.
To use this product you will print the cards (front and back) on cardstock. Laminate for durability and cut-out (be careful to include each tab). The cards are tabbed in alphabetical order to help your students find the sound they need while they are working independently. Hole-punch the top left-hand corner and store them on a loose-leaf ring. I've also included “Words to Practice” cards that you can store behind each phoneme card to keep a running list of words your students need to practice.
Since reading and spelling are closely related, you may find that you need a spelling system that uses the PHONEMIC STUDENT CARDS to help monitor your students’ progress and improve their spelling fluency. I have found MY SPELLING NOTEBOOK to be extremely helpful.
*The phonemes and sound pictures included on these posters were identified by Read America Inc. and presented in Reading Reflex.

Before becoming a homeschooling mom, I received my Master of Arts in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Florida. After graduating, I had a career as a base planner for the United States Air Force. While working at the USAF Academy, I met my pilot-husband and began travelling the US and growing our family. Since 2005, I have homeschooled our seven children in South Carolina, Washington, New Jersey, Illinois, and now, Alaska! I love being a part of my children's education. We have four boys, three girls and lots of learning styles. Every year brings new learning adventures and challenges--and I look forward to sharing them with you.
