MY SPELLING NOTEBOOK is a phonemic spelling system that you will use each week to help your students improve their spelling fluency. This product does not provide you with weekly spelling lists, but it will enable you to track and systematically correct your students spelling struggles. You can use it with any spelling program (like “All About Spelling”), or simply with your student’s daily written work.
This system does require diligence from both you and your students. You will need to record the words your students misspell; identify the sounds, and their sound pictures, that your students need to work on; and ensure that your students are completing their work.
Take a look at the THUMBNAILS to see how MY SPELLING NOTEBOOK is organized.
To use this system, you will first build a notebook for each student with two file folders. You will store your tracking sheets and their practice, assessments and fluency work in this notebook. After you have identified a word as misspelled, your students will take four steps to master it. First, they will write it correctly three times. Then, they will use it in a sentence. Third, they will discover other words that have similar phonemes and spelling--here is where the STUDENT PHONEMIC CARDS are super helpful (be sure to grab a set here)! Finally, you will assess their learning with an end-of-the-week quiz on one of the 50 seasonal assessment sheets. You will be amazed how systematically working on misspelled words transforms your students into proficient spellers!

Before becoming a homeschooling mom, I received my Master of Arts in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Florida. After graduating, I had a career as a base planner for the United States Air Force. While working at the USAF Academy, I met my pilot-husband and began travelling the US and growing our family. Since 2005, I have homeschooled our seven children in South Carolina, Washington, New Jersey, Illinois, and now, Alaska! I love being a part of my children's education. We have four boys, three girls and lots of learning styles. Every year brings new learning adventures and challenges--and I look forward to sharing them with you.
