Product Description

Life of Fred is a series of Language Arts books that break the old pattern of drill and kill. Instead of nothing but dry exposition and endless drill exercises, they contain fun stories about Fred Gauss, a child prodigy math genius. During his hilarious adventures, he encounters situations that call for solving language arts problems. Learners actually want to read these books.

These four books are short. Each contains 19 daily lessons. Since each lesson contains so much material, doing these four books once a year during your high school years would be a really good idea.

Do you think you will write more books cover other subjects such as science, or social studies? This seems the only way I can get my homeschooling kiddo into school. I even bought the plush it's for him!

Would you please post examples of what these books are like? I have a gifted reader, age 6 but can read at 4th grade level. Would theither younger books be appropriate or should I move to the older sets? Like he knows adverbs, adjectives, synonyms etc.

Are any consumables needed for the Life of Fred books in any subject?

Asked by a Parent on August 17th, 2016 (Edited)

At higher levels (like calculus and geometry), you will want to have a calculator. For lower levels and language arts books, you just need a pencil and a notebook.

  • Got them from the Library and had to purchase!
    Jul 04, 2016

My children LOVE Fred for math, so when I saw these I thought I'd give them a try. We checked them out from the library and my 13 year old was excited- we had to return them and I decided to purchase them. They are giving him an overview of grammar and language in a style that he loves and actually will use. We will be going through them a few times over the next few years, as a great addition to our LA training.

We love fred. I purchased the complete set to use for my 8th and 10th grader. We planned out to use all 4 books in one year and to repeat it every year until they graduate. I read the first book and its really funny.

  • Another great set of LOF books!

Dr. Schmidt is such a great author. He knows so much about so many topics and he teaches so many things in every book. He isn't just a math genius either. He knows his language arts too. For a kid that has already gotten to know Fred from his math adventures, they will love to see the adventures that Fred has waiting for them in the Language Arts series. The first book is quite easy but they get progressively harder. I would recommend for a middle school or high school aged kid.

It's a good series for initial learning of concepts and for reinforcement however I did feel the need to supplement with a writing course and worksheets to back up the concepts.
