Life of Fred is a series of Language Arts books that break the old pattern of drill and kill. Instead of nothing but dry exposition and endless drill exercises, they contain fun stories about Fred Gauss, a child prodigy math genius. During his hilarious adventures, he encounters situations that call for solving language arts problems. Learners actually want to read these books.
These four books are short. Each contains 19 daily lessons. Since each lesson contains so much material, doing these four books once a year during your high school years would be a really good idea.

Fun and easy to read, the Life Of Fred Language Arts series has a new take of learning grammar. I love the fun diagrams and clip art/illustrations. The content is well-explained, and topics include more than just Language Arts. The student really learns a lot without page after page of 'learn-this-list-of pronouns' type worksheets. In fact, there are just a few questions to answer at the end of each chapter, and the answers, explained, are on the next page. Fun and simple - Refreshing!

As good as the math books!

We have the Fred math books and love them, but I wasn't sure how the language arts books would measure up. I wasn't surprised, however, to find them just as useful, fun, and educational as the math! Even I enjoy reading them and refreshing knowledge I've forgotten and even learning new things!

Not just for high school!

I purchased these for my son, who would be a 4th grader. Some of the concepts are a little advanced (as it's intended audience is older kids). However, I think this is wonderful for an advanced upper elementary or perfect for a middle school child. It's just as wonderful as all the math books. I find myself learning things that I never was taught or do not remember.

We will be using LoF LA soon. I read parts of each book and my daughter will enjoy these as much as she does LoF math.

How can you not like Fred?
Feb 26, 2016
My kids love all things Fred. The language arts series can be appropriate for kids in younger grades. In my humble opinion, it all depends on what they happen to be studying. These books cover proper formatting for writing letters, capitalizing, punctuation among many other subjects. They are a fantastic supplement to the grammar program we are using. Even if the concepts do in the later books become too advance, we will consider it a preview of what's to come.

My 12 & 14 year old sons love these books! They read them & do the work without being told to. They like the fun, interesting stories & can understand it easily. These are a must have! I'm so grateful for a curriculum that gives them what they need & is not boring!!!

We love the LOF math books and recently bought the Language Arts series. I was a little hesitant because I had read it was for High School and my kids are in Upper Elementary and Middle School. But typical of LOF books these were fine for their age. Comprehensive and yet fun. Highly recommend this series in addition to the LOF math series. I will also say that I'm really impressed with how quickly Educents shipped the product to us; excellent service as always!

We have three boys we homeschool and our oldest at 12, has never been excited to write. He reads at a 12th grade or higher level, knows how to research topics using multiple books and sources but Detests writing. He and our 8 year old both jumped into the first book in this series, Australia and now ask daily to continue their lessons. While our 8 year old has no problem writing or reading, we are seeing a difference in him as well!! To think something as simple as this book could get our 12 year old to write willingly, I cannot say Thank You enough. Cannot wait for our youngest to share their excitement!!

Great books! 4.5 just to be clear!
Oct 08, 2015
These arrived in the mail today and the first thing I noticed were the quality of these books! They come in a clean glossy hard cover just like being the first class to receive a textbok that will probably be used for the next 10 years!
I love the content of these books as Fred pulls in concepts that deal with every day scenarios and fun adventures. I haven't read the entire set but from what I've skimmed through, he has engaging stories that I felt I was pulled in longer than I should have. At least I know that if it can capture my interest, my kids will probably feel the same.
I've read the first few chapters in each book before I let my kids read it to make sure it's age appropriate and for the most part, it is. There are some mentions of religion which is why I rate it 4.5 stars. They're there, but not enough to actually make this a biased book, I feel.

Did not disappoint. Bought Life of Fred Math so I bought this too.

I bought the Life of Fred Elementary Series and my kids loved it so much, I figured try the Language Arts Series as well. No major complaints and the stories in the book are fun and engaging with my kids.
I do say there are some parts of this book that you might want to leave out if you're a secular homeschooler. It's not much, but definitely be aware that there are mentions of religion but it's still an amazing series to give to your kids.
