Is mineshaft appropriate for a gifted, going into 5th grader(did 5th grade math this year in 4th)?

Asked by a Parent on June 3rd, 2016 (Edited)

5th Graders and some 6th graders should start with the Intermediate Series (Kidneys, Liver, and Mineshaft) before beginning Fractions. Some 5th and 6th graders would benefit from completing the last two books of the Elementary Series as well.

I have a child going into Saxon 5/6 math. Would this be good to keep his math facts fresh over the summer? How long does a typical student take to complete one book? Which book would you start a fifth grader on?

Asked by a Homeschooler on June 2nd, 2016 (Edited)

5th Graders and some 6th graders should start with the Intermediate Series (Kidneys, Liver, and Mineshaft) before beginning Fractions. Some 5th and 6th graders would benefit from completing the last two books of the Elementary Series as well. While each child is different, many students complete a book in about 1-2 months.

I would like to buy these for our 8 years old, which one should we get first? Plus, do you have something for our 3 years old?

Asked by a Homeschooler on May 25th, 2016 (Edited)

These books are in alphabetical order, so you probably want to start with Kidneys.

We don't have any Life of Fred books for toddlers, but Life of Fred Elementary starts at kindergarten: http://www.educents.com/life-of-fred-elementary-math-series.html.

Hi. I am teaching my 4 children this next year in grades 1, 4, 8, and 10.5. Do you consider Life of Fred to have a complete curriculum for my children since you incorporate more than just math in your books or do you suggest we use other things for History, Writing and Grammar, Science, Spelling, and Reading or Literature? Thanks for your help.

Asked by a Homeschooler, Parent, Teacher, and Super-hero on May 5th, 2016 (Edited)

Many customers do use Life of Fred as a complete Math curriculum and some even use it for Language Arts, but ultimately it depends on each child. It does not actually cover History, Science, or Language Arts concepts in detail.

We are using these to help the littles gain math fact mastery. They live this series! My oldest, a high schooler, uses it to supplement Saxon when he gets stuck. What a time saver!

• Finally!!!
May 02, 2016

As a homeschool mom of four children I have struggled finding a math curriculum that we really liked. Math has not been the "favorite subject" and I was so afraid that we would get behind. I was so excited whe I came across the Life of Fred series. Especially for my oldest daughter who loves to read. She just started the intermediate series last week and she loves it! I couldn't be more happy right now! Thank you Life of Fred!

While we aren't quite to the intermediate math series yet, my kids love the elementary books, and I couldn't pass on the chance to get a good deal on the later ones! This series is wonderful, and they shipped very quickly and were packaged very well.

First book I'm trying in the "Life of Fred" series. Excited to see how it will work for us. I like the storyline so far! It shows how math is used in real situations!

• Takes the work out of homework!
Apr 04, 2016

These books are fun to read-so much so that the kids barely realize that they've learned entire math concepts in the process. Because they are stories, my kids will read them over and over, reinforcing the math concepts and picking up more vocabulary (he throws in excellent words!) and other tidbits along the way. I was hesitant before buying these, thinking that you can't learn an entire mainstream semester of math in a story book, but I was wrong. Math doesn't need to be lectures and drills. It's about understanding how to solve for real world scenarios, and these books teach that perfectly.

• Great after the elementary series
Mar 02, 2016

These books are a great recap and extension to the elementary series. They review a lot about what was covered in the elementary books but also teach so much more - so much more math and other things. I'm an engineer, and I must admit that Fred has taught me a thing or 2 that I didn't previously know about math!

• Laughing out Loud!
Mar 02, 2016

I have been known to study Fred on my own, to make sure that I am aware of what the kids will be learning. I have been known to laugh out loud on many occasions - more recently with Kidneys. I love that we are learning more than just math! Social studies, history, art, music, science, grammer, foreign language, and not to mention just good old common sense...and I'm just talking about Fred's math books! Love all that we're learning!

• Fred is so great.....
Feb 26, 2016

I wanted to buy LOF for a long time. Once I found Educents, I purchased the elementary series immediately. These were for my 9 yr old son, and he liked it. My older son, 12 yrs old, loved listening to the chapters so much that I decided to buy the Intermediate set for him. They both love them a great deal, and my older son will just do extra math each day if it is with LOF. You will not be disappointed if you buy LOF, but it is important to start with Apples and work your way up no matter where your child is in school.

• Started late with Fred…
Feb 26, 2016

…but finally took the plunge thanks to the great deals on Educents. Seriously, thanks Educents! I was so hesitant to buy more curriculum. Surely many of you can relate, but I had so many moms try to convince me that these books were worth the investment, that I had to give one a try. Most of these sweet friends were hesitant to lend them out because their kids loved them so much. This is odd for homeschooling moms who usually love to share their curriculum and bend over backwards to lend out even the most expensive books from their collection. Now, I know why. I am not sure if my kids would be willing to lend out a Fred book, even if I were willing to do so.

Where to start? Well, that is subjective, but I am so glad that we didn't skip straight to our level of math. We started with the first one, then got another. We got hooked. One day, my son and I sat down and read a sample of the Language Arts series. He begged me for them.

For whatever it is worth, starting at the beginning helped us get a better grasp on Fred's life and his style of teaching. The books became great fun to just read. There is plenty in even the earliest books to interest older kids.

For example, my kids are now interested in Archimedes. Who was he? Why is the math building named after him? How many 4th/5th graders are interested in Archimedes? I don't know exactly, but those I know that do have read Fred.

As an added bonus, my kids now jump at the chance to read, frequently requesting a Fred book even if it has already been read. They get something new with each read. Oftentimes surprising me with little interesting facts or nuggets. I'll ask where they learned these things. The answer is most often, "Fred."

They tote the books with them everywhere just in case they need something to read and not once have they accidentally left a Fred book anywhere. Oh no! The Fred books are too precious to them. Prior to Fred, they'd bring books with them, but only at my urging and often books were left behind.

Fred books are fun, they are funny and they get kids and adults alike to think.

It has only taken us a short time to catch up where we need to be level-wise, it has been a fun ride full of laugh-out-loud moments.

• Wonderful! Kidneys and Liver
Oct 19, 2015

I was not so sure on these books. I heard a lot of good reviews but after we got them, just skimming through I wasn't sure my 9 year old daughter would like them. I was WRONG! she really likes them! They move at a pace she likes and being one continuous story about Fred's life keeps her interested and entertained. We will be back for more soon. She just finished Kidneys and is now on liver.

We are thrilled to have LOF in our homeschool and family. Our children absolutely LOVE LOF and ask to do more chapters each day. Looking forward to what this set brings to our collection. Happy LOF is something we can use for years to come with our younger kiddos.

• Kidneys, and Liver, and Mineshaft- Oh My!!

I f you have been with Fred through the elementary set, then you will not want to miss this 3 book Life of Fred intermediate set. If you have NOT met Fred, this would be a great place to get to get started!!

My son's love of math was squashed when our state system became more concerned with standardized test than with actual education. I pulled him out of the public school system, and began homeschooling.

We've gone through many math programs since then, but passion never returned. In fact, he had grown to hate it. Math had become something we both dreaded.

I ordered this set, and all that has changed!! By using these books, we have identified what concepts he was never taught, or just didn't grasp. He told us that he wished he could just start from the beginning with the Life of Fred. My husband and I are expecting that shipment to arrive this week, and will be ordering "Fractions", Decimals, and Pe-Algebra next!
