New to Life of Fred books? Here's everything you need to know: Change the Way Kids Learn Math – Use the Life of Fred Books

Product Description

Life of Fred is a series of math books that break of the old pattern of drill and kill. Instead of nothing but dry exposition and endless drill exercises, they contain fun stories about Fred Gauss, a child prodigy math genius. During his hilarious adventures, he encounters situations that call for solving math problems. Children actually want to read these books.

The stories carry on through the exercises, leading the student through them. Many of the books have a series of quizzes called Bridges every few chapters. Passing a quiz means the student is ready for the next chapter. Some books have all the problem solutions in them, while others have separate answer keys or companions.

I have an 11 year old girl who has been public schooled but has not retained much at all. She is very bright and artistic, and has a good sense of numbers....its the math that stumps her. She seems stuck in basic addition. Can not tell time correctly, and she is concerned about her ability to count money. and I asked her to subtract tonight, and she said she forgot how. We are able to home school now. Can you tell me which book (s) to start with?

Asked by a Parent and Super-hero on November 12th, 2016 (Edited)

Life of Fred books are not as linear as the typical "drill and kill" approach. Where you start may depend on your student's needs. Please click on the Sample link next to each book to see examples.

I have a third grader who needs more help with multiplication and division. He is new to this series. Where (what book) should he start?

Asked by a Homeschooler on October 30th, 2016 (Edited)

We recommend that 3rd grade students start around Goldfish. However, every child is different. Please click on the above sample texts (next to each book name) to make sure that it's appropriate for your student.

My son would be a 4th grade student in public school. We homeschool. Is it suggested to start with Apples and go through Jellybeans for our entire year this year?

Asked by a Homeschooler on August 18th, 2016 (Edited)

In 4th grade, most students are ready for Ice Cream. You may want to look at the sample texts (above).

  • My first grader loves them!

My 6 year-old daughter was so excited when we opened the box and she found more Fred books inside! She whizzed through the first one and can't wait to get started on the rest!

  • Loving these books!
    Nov 21, 2016

My 8 yr. old son is using ACE math paces but loves doing LOF at he end of our allotted math time! We keep a "notebook" we made for his answers at the end of each chapter and drawings of Fred in his adventures along the way. He thinks of it as fun, not work as math comes difficult for him. Thank you LOF!

  • LIfe of Fred takes math from tears to excitement
    Nov 15, 2016

I am really excited my 3rd grade daughter is starting with Apples, and will be going through this whole program. I do substitute with worksheets, etc where needed, but these books are great. I bought the entire series after years of tears with my son in home school math, and when I downloaded the samples and laughed while reading them, I was sold. Educents has the best deal on these books, low prices, money back, and fast shipping!

  • We love Fred!

We just ordered this for my 5 year old. She loves doing a chapter of Apples each day.
I don't think this is strong enough to stand alone, but it's an excellent jumping off point. This isn't the kind of book you'd give to your kids to read alone. Read it with them. Talk with them about the math, the problems, etc.
