Life of Fred is a series of math books that break of the old pattern of drill and kill. Instead of nothing but dry exposition and endless drill exercises, they contain fun stories about Fred Gauss, a child prodigy math genius. During his hilarious adventures, he encounters situations that call for solving math problems. Children actually want to read these books.

The stories carry on through the exercises, leading the student through them. Many of the books have a series of quizzes called Bridges every few chapters. Passing a quiz means the student is ready for the next chapter. Some books have all the problem solutions in them, while others have separate answer keys or companions.

Life of Fred: Apples (view sample text)

Life of Fred Apples is the first installment of a series of ten books from the Life of Fred Elementary Math unit. Fred, a five year old math prodigy goes through a series of events incorporating word problems in his story. His approach keeps your students engaged in math while covering topics such as algebra, geometry, telling time, and days of the week; which if your student can count to ten along with differentiating days, Life of Fred Apples will be the perfect first step in the series.

Life of Fred: Butterflies (view Butterflies sample)

Provide a break from the drill and kill worksheets by offering a new way to learn math with Life of Fred Butterflies. The second installment of the ten book series, Fred shows examples of linear measurements, time, geometry, and specific numbers! Your kids will be prepared for advanced math by remembering concepts instead of memorizing math facts seen in traditional learning. Use Butterflies to segway into the third book, Life of Fred Cats.

Life of Fred: Cats (view Cats sample text )

The Life of Fred: Cats is 128 pages filled with first grade material such as quarters, numbers vs. numerals, counting by three's, prime numbers, four basic emotions, adjectives, verbs, and more! Join Fred and Kingie as they draw examples to relate it to math. Examples such as the Mariana Trench, Ferdinand Magellan, Greek Alphabet, and ancient arithmetic like the sexagesimal system are mentioned in this book!

Life of Fred: Dogs (view Dogs sample text)

Graduate over to first grade with Life of Fred: Dogs and follow along with Fred as he uses Morse code, introduces adding two-digit numbers, count through consecutive even & odd numbers and more! First grade materials covered here are specific numbers, addition, patterns, fractions, ATM cards, idioms, the chemical elements & more!

Life of Fred: Edgewood (view Edgewood sample text)

The second grade materials covered in this 128 page book are parellel lines, right angles, functions, quarter of an hour, half dozen, six examples of functions, math poems, the four kinds of sentences, firearm safety & more!

Life of Fred: Farming (view Farming sample text)

How would I know which book I would use for 3rd grade?

Asked by a Teacher on July 6th, 2016 (Edited)

Great question! These books are geared at kindergarten through 4th grade, so you'll probably want to get the later books. They're in alphabetical order, with Apples covering the lower grades, and so on.

Educents has a great blog post to help you sort our which blog post is for you: https://blog.educents.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-the-life-of-fred-books-start-here/.

  • Perfect for Active Boy
    Jul 14, 2016

I have a very active boy who loves to listen to stories but cannot sit and do workbook pages. This series is perfect for him to learn math without having to sit and work on page after page. We've added manipulatives to extend the chapters and it it working great.

I have been looking for something different for Math. I came across the Life of Fred books, so I thought I would try one book. I love it!!! And my son loves it!! I have four little boys and it's nice to know I will be able to use these books for all 4 of them. Hoping I can eventually buy the rest of the set. I'm so excited over this awesome find. Thank you!

  • Great!
    Jun 19, 2016

Life of Fred is awesome! Besides the math, there's so many reasons why I like this curriculum.
For instance, (a.m. ) ante meridiem is Latin for; before noon or midday.
That's in there, and how a rook moves in chess and SO MUCH more.
    It is interesting and informative.

    Jun 14, 2016

We're still on the first book, taking our time going through it. Both our kids (6 & 9) love Fred and his silly tales. I do question why the number 7 is so important in Apples...

My son HATES math! Not anymore! I heard about these books from another homeschooling mom and decided to give them a try. My son LOVES them! He comes to ME now asking for Fred! He enjoys the stories and and he is learning more than just math. I've even learned some things I didn't know before! Fred is definitely going to be a part of our homeschool math up through high school!

  • Great!
    Jun 07, 2016

My 7 yo read "Apples" in one sitting the day after we got it (and did all the problems). I think it will be great also for another child (8 yo) I know who is not too fond of the way they do math at school - infinite pages of addition and subtraction problems without context...

  • Loving our new math books!
    Jun 07, 2016

From the start, my kids have been thrilled with LOF! I can't believe how quickly they have gone through them! The information is presented in an easy-to-understand story format, so they learn almost effortlessly. The stories keep their attention & they re-read LOF often, just for fun. I love that it includes higher math concepts & facts about other subjects, so they really are learning a LOT about a lot of things in a short, fun lesson. We use them as a supplement to our other math curriculum, but we are planning to go all the way through the program! They are a valuable resource & add so much depth the my kids' understanding of math! I also love that they can be reused later for our younger kids (no workbooks to re order), so they really are a great value!

  • Not the best start
    Jun 06, 2016

My son loves the stories but the practice parts at the end seem to be a little out of place. I do not think this is a stand alone math program for us.

I wasn't sure where to start with teaching my son math, beyond knowing his numbers and shapes. How does one even start? As a new homeschooling mom. The options were so overwhelming and I was getting daunted, especially because I have the type of dyslexia that effects math skills and would need to choose something that would be a good fit for all involved. LOF is just that. My son loves to read the Fred story and we use manipulates to show the math and do it together. He's 4, so I'm not asking for perfection, and if he just wants to read the chapter together we do. I don't worry about just reading the chapters, because the books are designed that they can be reread until all concepts have been grasped. I imagine this would also come in handy for homeschool parents who take summer and winter breaks, as they can just go back and reread the last book or few chapters. I absolutely love this series. I am such a fan that I showed the series to my father (who is 69 years old and learned math even more differently from myself) and he (who is not easily impressed by anything coming out of today's classrooms/education) thinks they are fantastic and the perfect way to teach math. It is my opinion that this series could be used as a stand alone curriculum, but I do not use it that way. It is, however, our daily math curriculum.

  • Finally A Great Math Program!
    May 30, 2016

After years of "drill and kill" math, my son and daughter are so excited to have Fred as a part of our family! Life of Fred really makes them think critically without them realizing it. Dr. Schmidt is a genius for writing these books! You may even catch your kids doing their math on a weekend!

  • Life of Fred is a Hit in our House
    May 30, 2016

After a few years of not knowing what LOF was all about, and then debating if we should get it or not, we finally purchased it. Thank you Educents for having it on sale! The day we got it, my 6 year old daughter, opened the box, and sat down right away to read it. Her take on it so far is.."This is COOL math! Did you know, you can do math with out even realizing it!"

  • Real Life Math
    May 24, 2016

I ordered the whole set because my 5 year old enjoyed the first book so much. He begs to do his fred math. There are concepts that he is learning that he would not normally be exposed to at this level but due to the real life situations it is presented with it makes sense to him. He loves the characters and the comical tone at times. After our school year was over he asked to keep his fred books out so he could still do math in the summer break. Excellent math supplement.

    May 18, 2016

We have tried other math programs for my 7 year old and ended up frustrated at the end of each lesson. Life of Fred has been a huge blessing for teaching math in our home. I help my daughter read the lessons which are entertaining and educational. You learn math without even knowing you are.

  • My 5 year old loves this!
    May 17, 2016

I tried to do traditional "worksheet" math and workbooks but my 5 year old was not liking it. I thought she just wasn't a math person but after a friend reccomended Life of Fred I found that she is really good at math. She just needed a different approach. She loves reading and the book format of this is perfect for her. She now looks forward to doing math. Its great :)

  • Life of Fred-Math
    May 16, 2016

We have four children; 12, 10, 7, & 3 and this has made math so much fun for all of us! My four year old gets to hold Fred or Kingie and she likes to repeat things that her brother and sisters say. It doesn't only help with Math, but also their writing skills with the short Q & A at the end of each chapter. It's great for a short attention span too! We love our Life of Fred series! :)

  • Math Made Fun
    May 16, 2016

My sons, ages 10. 8 and 5, will gather together and read these book with absolutely no prompting. They giggle and happily do math problems together. My older two now tell me that they prefer word problems to simple calculation problems, because word problems are more fun. As former classroom teacher and current homeschooling mom, I adore these books that make math fun and lighten my load! Thank you Life of Fred!! :)

    May 09, 2016

This is a great little math series! My son has always loved math (2nd grade)! I was concerned these would be too easy because he is advanced as far as math in common core standards. There is so much packed into these books that both of us are entertained. We love Life of Fred!

We added in LOF for our son to help with auditory processing skills. We used LOF at a lower level than his actual math and it has been such a great fit! We loved it so much we decided to use it from the beginning with our younger daughter.

My four year old enjoyed Apples so much, so I bought Butterflies for her and Fred Trigonometry for me! She asks for Fred as a bedtime story and during her bath. She always wants a second chapter. • Daughter loves math!
    Apr 25, 2016

My daughter did not enjoy math and it usually ended in tears. She loves Life of Fred! We laugh as we read them together and she is so proud of herself. We are currently in the 4th book, dogs. We do about a chapter a day, but some days she asks for 2 or 3. In church the other day we looked over and she was doing math problems in her notebook. She is only 6. I would recommend these books to anyone. It is definitely a different way to do math and may feel strange at first. My daughter's joy and enthusiasm for a subject that most kids hate shows me that these books are the way to go.

    Apr 18, 2016

How wonderful to be able to experience math in real-world applications, thus making it relevant and memorable! I am grateful for the increased, purposeful vocabulary these books are providing for my children along with the comprehensive math concepts! Such a delight. I had heard of them, but I doubted they could be as useful as claims suggested. I would recommend these to ANYONE!

  • My Kids BEG for Fred.
    Apr 13, 2016

I had seen reviews before saying parents had to literally stop their children from doing math. I thought "No way that's true". Well I take it back. My 7 year old has sped through the first book in the series and I literally had to hold him back. When he's reading confidently on his own I'm sure that will be impossible, but I'm O.K. with that! My 5 year old was begging to start his own notebook for his "Turn to Play" (end of chapter reviews). My 3 year old who listens in asks me if we can "read that Archimedes book again". They talk about Fred, they make jokes about Fred, they make up their own math problems FOR FUN. We're only K and 1st grade right now, but I am happy I bought the whole set. It was definitely money well spent I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone (and I have been recommending to all my friends since we started).

  • Was allergic to Math...
    Apr 11, 2016

My 9 yo son is on the autism spectrum, and has struggled with math to the point of tears and meltdowns on many days. We've tried several different programs, to no avail. Then, I bought the Elementary series from Educents. He finished Apples in under a week and is on track to do about the same with Butterflies. Today, he did it entirely on his own, before any of his other school work, correctly. I don't know about others, but for this young man, this is just the thing!

  • A nontraditional approach with rich results
    Apr 11, 2016

My oldest son, now 15, had much success when he switched to this series from Saxon. He did Fractions through Algebra, at which point he aced college placement exams for dual enrollment and seamlessly transitioned into Algebra II in a private school. With his feedback, I opted to use Life of Fred from the beginning with my youngest son, beginning with Butterflies at 5 years old. The approach is nontraditional. The instruction is done by implementing the math content into a storyline, and the story immediately drew my son in. He begs to do math every morning. Because he is still so young, we have tried to slow down the progress into advanced concepts. We achieved this by completing A-E and then repeating them all before beginning F and beyond. We use this as our main curriculum, supplementing only with flash cards and practice sheets on addition/subtraction/multiplication (and eventually division when we reach that concept). For our family, Life of Fred is a stand alone curriculum for which the resulting math comprehension is rich and sound. In our state, we must test our children's progress annually, and my sons have tested far beyond grade level, in large part to the foundational knowledge gained through Life of Fred. This curriculum gets a solid 5 stars from my family. We absolutely love it and are thrilled with the learning they encourage.

  • Math Time Transformed!
    Apr 07, 2016

Math was the dreaded time of day for both my daughters (8, 12). For my 6-year-old son, it wasn't dreaded yet, but we had spent 2 months just on the +2 facts and they weren't sticking. We've been using Math-U-See from the beginning and I have always loved its explanation of the concepts. However, it has left my kids very uninspired with its worksheet approach. They "hate" math. A friend recommended Life of Fred because our family LOVES to read and my kids love to make up stories. I found the first one at the library and gave it a try.

It has completely transformed our Math time! After only 1 day of using it, my middle daughter was begging to do Math. She, in particular, cannot get enough. She often wants to do several chapters at a time. My oldest is currently just reading through the elementary and intermediate series on her own before we start her on Fractions. She is really enjoying the change of page and story line. My son is memorizing his math facts with ease now that they are presented in the context of a story and a need. It isn't just rote memorization.

I am one relieved and happy mom!!! After only 1 month, all their opinions about Math had soared and I decided to purchase the whole set. I have already recommended it to several friends.

  • Love!!!!!
    Apr 06, 2016

I have had the hardest time finding a math for my 3rd grader, then we found Life of Fred. She is loving the books and learning at the same time! I bought it specifically for her, but my 2nd and 4th grader are living them as well. We only bought Apples and Butterflies to test them out, now we are looking foward to completing our collection!!

  • SO easy to follow!
    Apr 06, 2016

Just starting out my homeschooling adventure and math made me nervous! I love how easy these books are to read and follow. It's not overwhelming and my 9 year can do on his own while my 6 year old just needs a little guidance. Glad I purchased!!

  • Wish I had these as a kid!
    Apr 06, 2016

Whether you are using them as a primary curriculum with supplemental practice, or using them as a supplement to a different curriculum, these are awesome. I started reading through these a week ago before our semester started and I couldn't put them down! My 6 year old saw me reading them and is now on book 2.

Like any program, its' good to read through it either in advance or along with your child so you can be aware of the concepts they are learning and offer them additional practice as needed. I plan on continuing through the books until we find the level he is at, and then take it more slowly from there, probably doing 1-2 chapters a week and practicing the concepts in between (using problems we encounter around the house as much as possible).

My 10 year old can't stand math, but he loves stories. The Life of Fred series has been a blessing to us. We breezed through the elementary series, and we're looking forward to the continuing saga in the Intermediate set. I highly recommend it!!

    Apr 05, 2016

We have been so curious about what "Life of Fred" was after seeing tons of posts about it. I ordered Apples and Butterfly's and my 9 year old has breezed right through it. There is so much to this story and we are anxious to see where it goes. Lol I personally am trying to figure out exactly what Fred is. Looks like I will be ordering C and D very soon!

    Apr 05, 2016

My 2nd graders are learning and discussing concepts that haven't shown up in our other math curricula. We're really enjoying Life of Fred. My twins are going at different speeds through the books and they are both able to work independently for the most part.

We've recently finished Kindergarten A & B in Singapore math. While my son loved it and did just fine, he loves stories even more! I have endless praise for Fred so I'm excited to begin.

  • Love of Fred!
    Apr 04, 2016

Purchased for my 6 and 7 yo, who really liked this. Decided to have my 16yo who doesn't like math, and my 11 and 14 yo who are in algebra 1 this year, try it as well. The older 3 love Fred more than the younger ones! They are constantly telling me what Fred is up to and I love how he explains math by using everyday situations. I don't even think they realize they are learning but they are. Have now also purchased the intermediate and pre algebra books as well.

  • A Welcome Change!!
    Apr 04, 2016

My daughter loved math until we got to multiplication. Then she hit a mental road block. We tried everything I could think of to help, but nothing worked until we found Life of Fred. It has given her back her confidence! She even wants to read 2 or 3 stories each day! LOF has really boosted her confidence & given us hope again for math! Thank you!!

  • Learning without realizing it!
    Apr 04, 2016

These books are so cute and so much fun. My kids love to read and have always learned a lot from stories. I used reading to potty train, to deal with behavior problems, etc, so when I first heard of the Fred books, I knew they'd be a great fit for our family, and they are! We have the series up to "Intro to Algebra," and they build on each other seamlessly. My kids love to read them and the practice problems are more of a game than work. I'd recommend them to anyone.

  • So far so good!
    Apr 04, 2016

These books are hard back and good quality. My order came quickly and in good shape. My 2 kids (age 6 and 9) and I are reading through Apples. They think it is hilarious and, although it is geared toward basic addition, there is much that is at my older child's level and teases at higher math concepts. I have skimmed through the chapters of several of the other books. Multiplication is introduced in the 6th book," Farming". This is where my 9 year old needs to be, but I felt he needed to start at the beginning since it is a story series. The kids like competing for or work in together on the questions at the end of the chapters.

I am so excited that I stumbled upon Life of Fred math books! We are starting at Apples and going through them quickly until we get to her level and then we will slow down. It is such a fun way to do math! No more complaints. Loved my first purchase with educents. Great price and super fast shipping! Will purchase from here again.

  • No More Complaining About Math!!!
    Mar 30, 2016

I had read many good reviews about Life of Fred Math and after struggling to get my homeschooled children interested in Math, I decided to order one book and give it a try. We all immediately fell in love with Fred and had so much fun that the kids didn't want me to stop. Needless to say, I will be ordering the complete set.

  • Thanks to Life of Fred, my kids love math!
    Mar 25, 2016

I homeschool my kids and we do a diverse set of math activities that include Life of Fred. My kids (in kindergarten and 1st grade) absolutely love Fred! They laugh at his exploits and eagerly do the math problems at the end of each short (3-4 page) chapter.

We've been doing about one Life of Fred chapter a week, but my kids want to do more.

I love how Life of Fred introduces a wide variety of concepts that cover math, history, art, and more. I love how Life of Fred gently introduces algebra concepts even in the early elementary books.

We currently own the elementary series but I hope to purchase all the other series as well.

This ain't your Momma's math curriculum! Fred has you on his wild adventure, and you never know where it is headed. Two things you do know is that it will be fun, and it will be a learning experience. Outside the box type of learning! My 2nd grader loves it!

    Mar 18, 2016

The only problem I have with Life of Fred is that it took me so long to discover this awesome math program. I have 5 kids , 3 olders and 2 youngers, if I would of know about this program with my now high schoolers when they were in 1st grade, we would of saved a ton of tears and years of frustration. Love Life of Fred

    Mar 18, 2016

My boys were so bored with their math workbooks last year which made school time miserable for all of us. I went out on a limb and decided to try this series and I couldn't be happier with it. My boys are 11 and 8 and they look forward to doing math every day. We're working our way through the entire series. I may decide to supplement here and there in the future, but for now this is working wonderfully for us.

    Mar 18, 2016

My first grader does not enjoy math. I ordered Apples because it came highly recommended from other homeschool moms whose child does not seem to enjoy math. Now he begs me to do math. We ordered Butterflies because Apples was such a success and both books are highly enjoyable! We read Fred during school, at church, during free time and at bedtime. I highly recommend this whole series!

  • Life of Fred Elementary Series
    Mar 17, 2016

We started with Apples in 6th grade. Yes, we went back to the basics in order to pick up Fred's story from the beginning and fill in any gaps. Although my daughter was doing well using another math program, she dreaded math every day. I figured LOF would be all review in the beginning. In terms of basic math, it was. But learning to think algebraically added so much more, in addition to all the extra info we get from the reading. We are already in Goldfish, and still enjoy and learn from the stories and the math.

We're using Apples to introduce our preschooler to math gently. We'll add in Miquon when we finish this book and we will likely continue to use LOF as a supplement for her

  • Dr. Schmidt is a genius!
    Mar 10, 2016

I fell in love with Fred when I bought the Beginning and Advanced Algebra books. I learned Algebra with my children. I'd passed it in high school, but I didn't understand it until I worked through LOF with my children. LOF gives kids the tools to unravel math and understand it...not just get through some problems. I purchased the elementary books for my youngest when they became available. Unlike my older two who started with Saxon, he has never complained about doing main...in fact, he asks to do it and sometimes asks to do more than what I have planned. They only think I add is some facts practice throughout the day. I feel that it is as complete as Saxon but with a whole lot less paper.

    Mar 08, 2016

My kids love this series. They find it very entertaining and engaging. I have some reservations about the pace. My Kindergardner is currently using Butterflies. I feel like I need to supplement a little bit with some easy math facts 0-10. My 4th grader started this year with Apples even though it was way too elementary for him. I wanted to see if there were some holes from public school. He has zipped through it. But, again, I feel like I need to supplement with some multiplication flash cards.

LOF makes learning fun and is self-paced in exactly the way we need. For the first time, met 2 oldest don't drag out 1 small lesson for hours! They are 1-2 grade levels behind their peers because of the constant fighting. Now my oldest has gone through the first 2 books in 2 days, and she is remembering facts we've been working on for YEARS! My other daughter is starting to understand addition and subtraction concepts we've been working on for 3 years! They want to do more lessons! I find them picking it up during their free time! These books teach math the way it should be taught! Fred is fun and engaging and the books are written in a story-like fashion. Kids hardly know they are learning math. • Love this product!
    Mar 01, 2016

I was hesitant to spend the money on this series, so I started with buying Apples on Ebay. My son, with high functioning autism, love d it so much that we finished it in 3 days. That's when I knew we were going to need to get the rest of the books! The books are amazingly well written! As a former classroom teacher, this is the kind of logical thinking that children are missing in their public school education. On the flip side, I know that I'm not alone when I say that you will likely want another math program or supplemental worksheets to practice what you learn. Kids may understand what they are learning, but actually practicing it could use more of your time. I still love this product though! I was shocked to see my 6 year old could understand simple algebra concepts in the first or second book! Highly recommend and love!

    Mar 01, 2016

I love these books so far. My kids have so much fun reading them and doing the questions. It's wonderful to hear their laughter while they learn. My youngest has claimed him as her new brother even. The only downfall? I've had to break up a few arguments over who gets to go first or how many chapters they get to do before giving him it to the next kid, but I'm not complaining.

I got the first three books ok Life of Fred (Apples, Butterflies, and Cats) for my daughter who's in kindergarten. We have been taking them slow but if it was up to her we would have been through all three books by now. She asks daily to do "Fred" first and she really enjoys it. Not only is the story cute but she's learning! It's crazy to see how much she has learned in such a short amount of time. We will be buying the rest of the elementary books!

We finally took the leap and started expanding our LOF library and we couldn't be happier. The kids get so excited when a new Fred book arrives. My daughter was really struggling with math, it was the dreaded subject. Then, we started getting the Fred books. All of a sudden math became fun and exciting. Then, all subjects became more fun because the Fred books do not just cover math, they cover science and English grammar and a bit of history all of it is done with humor. The Fred books are like really good potato chips, you can't have just one!

  • Thankful for Life of Fred
    Feb 26, 2016

I am so excited to write a review for Life of Fred! We had decided to unschool this year, following advice from my son's auditory and vision therapists. After a few months all was well except math.I felt like we were completely in a rut. I came across Life of Fred elementary series. We decided to try it because my son learns best in story form. Life of Fred has been perfect for us because he needs to do most of his schooling for now in auditory form. The story and short questions at the end work great with with this style of teaching. He's not reading yet so I'm able to read it to him. We picked the option to buy one book at a time so we could see if it was a fit and because financially that was perfect for us. We absolutely love it! My son looks forward to it every day! I am so thankful for this

    Feb 17, 2016

It's been hard to find something that gets my kids excited about math, but Life of Fred has been a winner. I started reading a chapter of Apples every day with my kindergartner and second grader, and it's been great for both of them. My kindergartner is learning new concepts, while my second grader is getting a solid review plus some new information. I love how it covers math in such a playful, problem-based way.

My 9 year old is struggling with math, she is in the 3rd grade but at 1st grade level. We have tried hands on math, 2 different workbook styles with lots of drill and an on-line math program. My daughter LOVES doing Life of Fred Math and is understanding it!! We still use a workbook and lessons on-line for extra practice, but the Life of Fred is the one we sit down and work on together. She loves the stories and is able to answer the questions with an understanding of what she is being asked to do. We were able to move through the first two books fairly quickly, but we are now beginning to slow down. This is a great product for kids who struggle with concrete or traditional learning.

We have been searching for a math program, and have tried MANY, but they've all been a struggle! This has been the first one that my son actually likes, understands, and doesn't get frustrated! Thank you ;)

  • Incredible!
    Feb 08, 2016

My 8 year old struggled with Singapore math and many days ended in frustration, tears, and a statement of "when will I ever use this"...ugh what was a mom to do! I surrendered to LOF reluctantly because I never thought something so simple could be of real academic quality. Forgive me LOF for my doubts....just mid way through Apples: no fighting, concepts understood AND put into practice!!! Already has learned intro to algebra, intro to negative numbers and temperatures, and has improved in Spelling (is dyslexic). All Singapore focused on was adding...after 2 years in. He has begged me to never return to Singapore and I do not see why we should so I purchased entire LOF Elementry Series.

  • Amazing...
    Feb 07, 2016

I read lots of blogs about these Life of Fred books, and I discussed with my hubs, and we decided to give it a go! We could not be more impressed. Our 8yr old is a math whiz, but he hates the way he learns math (previously in public school) and so when we began homeschooling this winter we have been looking for a way to help him enjoy the Math that he is so good at. Life of Fred has done that. He begs to read these books, while starting with Apples is very easy Math for him, he is learning other math skills he hasn't really touched yet while getting to know Fred. He is so excited and wants to do Math everyday! Love this! We do supplement with Khan Academy, and now when he does that he doesn't complain. ;)

  • My kids, ages 8 and 6, LOVE LoF!
    Feb 06, 2016

My daughter is 8, and is in 4th grade. She loves math and she loves reading, and I feel that Life of Fred really plays into both of these.
My son is 6, and is in 2nd grade. He is much more hesitant as far as math goes, and really doesn't like anything that is along the lines of "sit down and do this lesson and worksheet" type stuff. But he LOVES Life of Fred! When I say, "Hey, lets sit down and do some Life of Fred", he never says no. It really does make math fun and engaging.
My children are constantly talking about Fred, Kingie, their friends, and their adventures. I wish I would've had this as a kid!

  • My daughter is hooked!
    Feb 05, 2016

We have just begun using the Fred books but my 9 year old daughter is already completely engaged! She begs to keep going after we finish each chapter. I love how so many topics are incorporated into a "math" book. Math is a strong area for her but these books cause her to look at concepts in a different way.

    Jan 28, 2016

My 5 year old is a great reader, but hates math. After some painful sessions, we gave Fred a try and will never look back! He always asks to read extra chapters and he doesn't even think of it as math work.

    Jan 14, 2016

We've tried so many different math programs from Saxon to online mah programs and my 12 yr old was frustrated with the methodology behind these curriculums. But Life of Fred has exploded her understanding, relating it to her where it's practical and doable in real life situations! She's learning all kinds of things and I think not just math...and that's why we love it!

Just the fact that were not sitting here staring at a sheet of Math facts every morning makes my day. My daughter does not have a math brain, but she sat down and read the next three Fred books when they arrived. Even I am learning some things I never learned before in Apples, Butterflies, and Cats! I am a tightwad out of necessity, but I couldn't afford not to get these. I also appreciate the good prices here at Educents!

  • No More Crying
    Nov 12, 2015

For some reason as soon as it was time to learn something new, math became something to fight with and cry about for my daughter. It made me so sad to see school become anything but fun for her when she used to love it! Along came Fred. I love the idea of it and am crossing my fingers it will do the job, but all that aside, my daughter LOVES it. LOVES! She asks me if we can do several chapters in a day. I am having my son listen to it too, although he still loves his Saxon, and my older daughter has been asking to go through the older books. Fred has definitely helped bring my homeschool back to life.

  • Awesome Math Books
    Nov 06, 2015

My daughter has been struggling with some math concepts. She doesn't like to do math and would be frustrated if she doesn't know how to get the answers. She is good with Math facts but not with problem solving. But Fred of Life changes her way to see Math. She likes the story telling approach mixing with math problems. It's very fun to read too!

  • Fun!!!
    Nov 03, 2015

My children have never begged to do math before! We have almost finished Apples. They are in 3rd and 4th grade, so it's pretty simple right now, but it is helping them find a love of math. Fred helps us see things in a different way. I love that higher math principles are introduced in a way that the children can understand them, but that they don't have to show their knowledge of it. They are meant to be read through one chapter at a time, a few questions answered at the end of each chapter, and then Fred's answers are given on the next page. They children love it. We get through a chapter in around 5 minutes! The books are not meant to be written in so they can be used for other children or sold when you are finished! I am enjoying the Life of Fred, even for me!

  • Math is now something to look forward to!
    Oct 24, 2015

We've used so many popular math curriculums. The kids were learning, but we were all having trouble staying motivated and there have been tears from everyone involved. Life of Fred has brought a needed change in the way we feel about math. My children are requesting lessons for fun and I am excited to teach with these books. The curriculum is very straightforward and thorough. LOF is a self paced curriculum, not Common Core. While we have some written work, it's very minimal. No more work sheets! I have needed to provide a little practice in order to help them retain some of the concepts but I'm enjoying the flexibility we have. I can play games with them and fine tune individual trouble spots and they're motivated to do it so they can move on to the next book. They really want to master this subject! Fred is helping my children notice math in their own lives and embrace a love of problem solving like I've never seen before. As a parent, I finally feel relieved and happy about a math curriculum. If I had known what a great fit this is for our family, I would have bought these books years ago for my older children who are still struggling and unhappy with math. I'm definitely buying the upper levels so all of my children can have a better experience.

  • Fun way to learn math
    Oct 13, 2015

My son absolutely loves Fred and Kingie and finds the stories hilarious. He has very easily and gently been learning math concepts and enjoying the process.

The series has very little practice, just a couple of questions at the end of each chapter and sometimes those questions aren't even math related so we usually supplement with math games which also helps us space out the work because if my son had his way he would read an entire book in one sitting.

  • Math Gaps Are Like Potholes - Frustrating And Costly!
    Oct 08, 2015

We became a homeschool family in 2013, when our 4th grade son, who had always excelled in school, especially math, failed ( 58% was his grade ). No warning. No calls within that 9 month period. Just a report card that was hideous. He wasn't doing his work in class nor was he bringing home any completed papers, or even homework. Why? He was ashamed and scared. He wanted to do well, but he didn't understand the work, and it was made worse by teachers and a school system that saw this as "his" problem, and ignored it. I withdrew him from school the next day. Our homeschool journey began.

It's now 2015, and my now 12yr old son is, by usual standards, a 7th grader. While he has flourished in all other subjects, he still struggles with math. We've spent a small fortune on every math curricula on the market. He had become convinced that he would never do well in math, and I was convinced I had failed him as a mother. Enter "Fred".

I had heard moms of younger children talk about Life Of Fred, and read rave reviews, so I decided to do some research myself - 3 months worth!! We decided to try it, and I chose to start him with "Honey". It was in the second chapter of Fred's delightful, and engaging story of his everyday life, that my son ask me, "What's a cardinal number and a whole number?" What??? "You don't know what those are?" I ask him. That's 2nd and 3rd grade knowledge. How is it my son did not know this?? I hunted down his old workbooks he had brought home from school those years - both still filled with half their pages never done. The info was there, but - it had been skimmed over, and never actually taught. Whole sections of these workbooks were never used. AH HA!!! My child, and no doubt countless others, had fallen into a huge gap, void of vital information!!

Ok. Problem identified. Now what? My gosh, he's 12yrs old, we can't start all over, it will humiliate and destroy him right?? WRONG!!

Life Of Fred is like no other math program out there. It's a story that begins with book one, and continues all the way through high school. It includes every other subject, such as science, history, geography, and more. Each book contains short, 4-6 page chapters, and usually is less than 20 chapters per book. This makes it possible for each child to go at a pace comfortable for them. I know my son will move quickly through most of them, but he will be learning so much more than just dull answers to boring math questions. Potholes that have plagued him for years, will now be filled in, while different areas of learning will be added and expanded. It's a win - win for him!! He loves reading of Fred's adventures - so much so, that he completed "Honey" in just 2 days - even with gaps in some areas!! I by the end of this school year, he will be at an age appropriate level that's right for him.

I see a light shining bright from within my son that was almost extinguished completely. As he watched me place the order for the complete elementary set of Life Of Fred, I said " I'm can't wait to see how Fred starts, and I want to see how it ends too, so be ready to order more!" I smiled and assured him that not only would Fred be part of his learning as long as he desired, but that Fred would be gift wrapped for Christmas presents this year for his niece and nephew, my 2 grandchildren. No more costly potholes for this family!!

This is a great product that my kids love to do. I have many many math books and products attempting to get them to enjoy, or at least not fight me to accomplish, math. Life of Fred is the best I have found.

  • Worth Every Penny/Dollar Spent On It
    Oct 04, 2015

This is by far the best Math curriculum and easiest to teach or read. At first my kids were dreading it. But now, they want to keep reading. We are on the third book (Cats) and they don't want to stop for the day. We do not add anything to our lessons. If we get to a point where they don't understand it, we will find a supplement for that lesson, but we're not at that point yet. I'm super happy that my kids are enjoying Math now. This was worth every penny I spent on it.

  • Completely transforms relationship with math
    Sep 14, 2015

The books arrived this week, and my elder son (age 8 1/2) has already devoured Book One and incorporated its teachings in his daily experiences! He is a voracious reader, thus far disliking even the most engaging math books, so this series is perfect for him.

The books teach how to think not just what to think or memorize. They teach creative processing and problem solving, allowing for and promoting personalized ideas.

The stories are engaging and funny to children (and adults) and teach math concepts, history, art, astronomy, and other facets in a way that connects up to our lives rather than as abstract concepts.

I am thrilled we discovered this series and feel it is completely worth the investment.

  • Why is math needed?
    Sep 12, 2015

My child was always asking why he needed to learn math. He does not like math and get easily frustrated. Teaching him was a chore and worse he was not learning. Fred makes it so much easier to match the math to actual life events that he can relate to.
This has transformed my lessons. He is starting to learn, does not dread the math lesson, and our time together is so much more enjoyable. Fred has made saved our relationship and he may actually learn to appreciate math.

  • Perfect for us!
    Sep 10, 2015

My youngest has had a hard time with math and after reading so many positive reviews on Life of Fred, we decided to try it for ourselves. It has truly changed the way math is viewed. My daughter doesn't get upset or overwhelmed anymore.

Every morning she gets up and asks to do math and see what the next adventure is going to be. She keeps saying to me that she never thought math could be so much fun.

If you're undecided on whether you should buy Life of Fred, go ahead and buy it. You will not be disappointed!!!

  • Now I believe the reviews...
    Aug 19, 2015

We were tired and stressed and just plain over it in our homeschool journey this past year. My daughter fought me every step of the way, mainly because of math. This is just not her strong suit and no matter how hard I tried, I just could not find the spark. At my wits end, I purchased this product hoping that it would engage her in a way that other programs had not. I wanted her to see that math can be enjoyable and is used in so many interesting ways. After reading the description I thought it may be a good fit for our family and that maybe the diverting stories would also be a good way to relax her and not make her feel so pressured to perform. We read Apples for the first time yesterday and this morning she begged me to "read the Math Story again! I want to do that!" I dusted my chin off after it fell to the floor and wished silently to myself that I had known about this wonderful book series sooner. If you are on the fence and unsure if you will see a return on your investment - I encourage you to at least buy one to try. You will be so glad you did!

  • Great fit for this family
    Aug 10, 2015

As a homeschool mom "teacher" I was satisfied with the math program we'd always used, but it got pricey, especially with my oldest getting into higher levels and more kids coming up needing more new workbooks with each level. And from the children's' perspective, math was to be endured, unlike our other "interesting" subjects.

We ordered one Life of Fred book to give it a try and everyone was entertained AND doing math - at once! We ordered elementary and middle school levels for the coming term at an excellent price. My oldest enjoyed reading right through the earliest level books just to laugh at Fred!

I was looking for a less expensive but very good math option and I found it with the unexpected bonus of fun and well-rounded teaching. It fits beautifully with our "Life is learning" homeschool ideal, as Fred is constantly using not only math but EVERY subject throughout his day, as needed, such as Latin phrases, famous historical figures, literary references...the list goes on.

For fluent readers this is a great way to learn "reading to learn" - self-teaching - which we want for all our children. They can also cover the material at their own pace.

There may be more than one approach for various learning (or teaching) styles or students who are not yet fluently reading, since they'd miss the significance of the many spelled learning opportunities - one of the great aspects of this series. I read it with my reluctant readers and they still learn and enjoy the math and so much more.

Every homeschool should give these a try, ideally starting right from the beginning so that math never seems dull. I will definitely be recommending Life of Fred (and Educents) to all of my siblings as they begin homeschooling their own kids. And of course we'll be expecting our grandchildren to learn with Fred!

  • Quite Simply the BEST Math Book I've ever seen/used
    Aug 01, 2015

This is a great series, and the Elementary books are great. I've used Right Start Math as well as a Math Through Literature program, and my children have liked Life of Fred the best. It is also simpler to use...no preparation is necessary, and a lot of information is passed through the fun story in each chapter. There are just a few questions to be answered at the end of each chapter which my 6 year old had very little trouble with, though they did make her think, and helped her understand what the math symbols mean, even helped with her handwriting, days of the week, etc. I like that Life of Fred helps us understand the concepts solidly without needing to pull out all of the manipulatives.

I've learned that (my children at least) form some dependence on hands on manipulatives and have trouble switching to the abstract, or just knowing it...and these books have helped with that transition. The best part was that my children ASK to do math with this and will sit down and concentrate on the questions on their own...even getting upset if they are interrupted.

This set is a good resource. Educents has the best price, by far! If you buy the whole set, you get free shipping too!

  • My kids love this
    Jul 31, 2015

    Pros:
    - Shipping was fast and free
    - Easy to understand math problems WITH context as to why one would have to calculate problems step by step
    - Very kid friendly!

    Cons:
    - My personal bias is the way I learned math was drilling, practicing, and repetition on math problems. This is answers the "why" are we doing this math vs just do this math because it's important.
    - Funny and quirky stories that keep my kids engaged but I also feel this works best by pairing it with similar math lessons outside just this book.

  • Changed math for my kids
    Jul 31, 2015

Math time in our house was dreaded by my kids and myself. It would often result in tears and my son often said "I'm stupid, I can't do it." Now math is their favorite subject! When we have completed their lessons for the day they beg to do more LOF! There are no more tears and no more feeling bad about themselves. It's the best thing that has happened to our homeschool day!

    Jul 23, 2015

My seven year old daughter really loves the Life of Fred I love the approach these books take and as a math teacher, I definitely approve. You should read them in order to make the most sense as it builds on the previous storyline. It's a perfect way to introduce math to your kids because the way these books are written. They create a story to capture our daughter's attention with quirky anecdotes and examples they can find in real life.

  • My lifesaver!
    Jun 23, 2015

My dd is in love with Fred! We just finished the first book in the elementary series, Apples, and are starting the next one, Butterflies, tomorrow.

We have tried three different math curricula and all three have produced tears at some point. I was hesitant to try Fred because it didn't seem to me like a "real" math curriculum at first glance. I went ahead and purchased because of the great reviews from other homeschoolers in our area. I was desperate for something my daughter would be able to understand without tears and frustration. She proceeded to finish the book within a few days and never once balked about it! She even kept **begging** me to let her finish "just one more chapter!" and chattered for days about the silly things Fred did or said. Fred has saved our homeschool life.

    Jun 06, 2015

Our family loves Fred! I literally can't pull these books away from my kids. That sounds crazy, since they are math books, but they are so fun and relatable to the real world. No more crying through math...all I hear is giggles and laughter. I am so happy we found the Life of Fred Elementary Math series. We're going to be trying all of the LOF books soon and will absolutely be ordering them from Educents. The customer service was great and the price can't be beat!
