Engage your students with an engineering design challenge. This activity provides a simple yet comprehensive introduction to the engineering design process.
Product Description

STEM challenge / engineering challenge #2: I am so excited to share my second Engineering Design Challenge! This STEM activity provides a great introduction to the Engineering Design Process, and includes hands-on fun for your budding structural engineers. These challenges use common items you likely already have in your classroom or can easily obtain.

Materials needed for this challenge: pipe cleaners (chenille stems), ~55 per team (or student if you do this as individual projects), tape measure, 4 straws per team, and a stop watch or timer (a clock would be fine too).

There are duplicate copies of 3 pages to include metric measurements, and alternate spelling of favorite (favourite).

Contents
Designing a Power Transmission Tower Overview (2 pages)
Intro to Engineering for Elementary Students (teacher guide to facilitate the discussion)
Detailed preparation suggestions to plan for before, during, and after the challenge (1 page)
Warm-up Activity (1 page)
Engineering Design Challenge overview (1 page)
Testing data sheet (1 page)
Engineering Design Challenge Book (10 pages, takes you through each phase of the EDP)
Engineering Design Challenge Worksheets (2 pages, same as booklet but for upper grades or to save paper print front/back)
Follow-up Activity (1 page)

Junior Engineer Certificates of Completion (color and black and white both included)

Please Note: You do not have to purchase these engineering design challenges in order. They are all self-contained. If you purchase this one first, you can purchase any of the other add on packs (see below) for more challenges!

About the Seller

As a former engineer and current homeschooling parent, I love creating fun and practical-life math units as well as hands-on math and science experiments! You can read about some of the experiments and activities we've done on my momgineer blog, or like my Facebook page for updates. I have two very curious home learners that keep me on my toes constantly creating new activities and games, as this is how they best learn. I primarily create these materials for them for our homeschool classroom, but I have also created units for other homeschooling families.
