Almost all English reading systems based on a phonetic approach begin by using CVC words. Children usually learn short vowel words first because what you see is what you get.
Although many words in English do not follow rules of phonics, most of them do. So teaching children patterns that work most of the time builds confidence to figure out words that are new to them.
This interactive CVC Word Study pack focuses on 20 key CVC words:
• 4 x short a • 4 x short e • 4 x short i • 4 x short o • 4 x short u
I have, Who has? Game
This is for students to familiarize themselves with the focus words in a fun setting. Although the pack focuses on 20 keywords, I have added more to this section to allow for a bigger class.
Letters of the Alphabet: with hard and easy cutting options. Print multiple couples for groups of students.
Puzzle it Out!
Spelling Word Mats – I have included matching mats for the easy and hard cutting options. There are 5 pictures on each word mat. Students lay the correct letters/sounds, in the right position on the mat – encourages blending.
• Workbook Cover • A recording sheet to write the 20 CVC words that have been completed on the word mats • Trace and write CVC words, plus space to write sentences and illustrate them • Fill in the missing vowel – color and blackline options are included • Match the picture to the correct word – choice of 3 - circle the correct answer. Color.
This is a color version of ‘match the picture to the correct word’. Cut out, laminate and have your students choose the correct answer with clothespins.
