Cookie Landform Project Science Essential Standards 3.E.2.1 and 3.E.2.2 This is a great, fun project for kids, but can be used as an assessment for teachers. Students create their own island of landforms using cookies and different ingredients. Then they draw a map of their island and must include a map key and compass rose. Project Directions: Day One: Have students create their cookie islands. For my third graders, I require their cookie island to have at least 4 different landforms/bodies of water. You will need to take a picture of their cookies when finished. (Materials needed—large sugar cookies for island, blue napkin for island to sit on, cake icing for landforms to stick, green sprinkles for grass or plains, Hershey kisses for mountains, red sprinkles to make mountains into volcanoes, chocolate chips for hills, blue sprinkles for water, candy corn for glaciers—of course these are just suggestions and can be changed to meet your needs). Day Two: Students will need their pictures of their landform cookies to complete the map activity. They will create a map key for their cookie island.. I use this as a quiz grade to see how well students understand map keys and the compass rose. Check out my TPT store for a landform booklet and bodies of water booklet to introduce all the landforms and bodies of water before creating the landform cookie.
