When spring comes around and it's time to hatch butterflies or study animal life cycles, your class will be able to read and learn more about the stages in the life cycle of a butterfly with this mini-packet to be used for close reading activities with small groups or the whole class.
This item contains one nonfiction passage written in the second grade and third grade text complexity band. It may be read, with only a little support, by students who are reading at grade level. It can be used with high-achieving or end of the year first grade students or fourth grade learners reading below grade level.
- text dependent question page (emphasizing main idea, context clues, author's purpose, summarizing, vocabulary, nonfiction text features - bold print text style) - 3 culminating writing activities with focus question to set purpose for reading (summarizing the article, creating a new title for the article and a comparison with another familiar life cycle) - culminating diagram (of the stages) drawing and labeling activity -writing papers for constructed response with prompts -graphic organizer (to provide structure for a 5 sentence paragraph with transitions and text-based support) - 2 point checklist/rubric for assessment of the writing piece based on comprehension of text
** Please note that this is a reading activity and the text is not intended to teach all that there is to know about butterflies! It is an overview of the life cycle of a butterfly through these stages - egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), adult. :)
