Stop That Blurting and Interrupting

I was asked to create some ideas and responses for a lesson that a former student teacher was using in her classroom with some special kiddos. She was using the book : “My Mouth is a Volcano” by Julia Cook and Carrie Hartman; however this packet can be used with the book or it can stand alone. It is meant to be used with grades: K-3, but can be adapted for older grades.

So I am sure you are wondering what’s included in this packet:

1. Strategy cards to use and discuss to help child to be better listeners and not interrupt when they feel like they might explode! These cards can be put on a chart as you discuss this topic or simply placed somewhere in the classroom for reference. 1 blank card is included to add other ideas or you can simply write them on the chart s you glue these cards on the chart.

2. 6 differentiated response sheets that can be used for various students in various ways.

3. 8 role playing cards to allow students to think what they might do in situations where they feel like they might interrupt.

4. 2 awards to use for children who may have this difficulty and need some positive reinforcement when they remember to use the recommended strategies.

5. An original poem to read and reflect upon or hang in the classroom.

An idea you might want to use to motivate your students and to demonstrate an explosion:

Ask the students if they know what interrupting means. After listening to responses, formulate a short definition. Discuss how sometimes you can feel like you might explode when you really want to say something but someone else is talking. Then shake a club soda bottle a bit and have each student shake it as you pass it. Once each student has had a turn, open the bottle in a large tub or container OR NOT…a mess can always be cleaned up and show your class that sometimes we feel like we are going to explode if we are not able to blurt out what we want to say.. just like this soda bottle.

 I learned a LOOOOOng time ago that a little sweetness goes a long way so I have tried to look at the positive side of life as a retired teacher of 30+ years, a wife, mom and Mimi of three. Who doesn’t want to visit their Mimi and experience a reality “Candyland” game with all kinds of forbidden pleasures like lollipops, Hershey hugs and kisses, cupcakes, brownies and all those sugary treats, They can visit and experience the sweetness of Mimi’s and then go back home on a sugary high!
My teaching style was and still is to keep all lessons dazzling, fun, hands on and whatever each child needs to learn and grow! I LOVE to differentiate instruction as much as I can! Let’s face it, each year you get a classroom full of kiddos as different as a box of chocolates...Each piece might look pretty much the same on the outside, but when you take a bite, you can see and taste the difference...all sugary and sweet, but different in many ways!
I hope you enjoy using all these lessons and ideas as much as I did during my teaching career. Have fun and remember to enjoy each day because it is definitely a SWEET TREAT!!
