Clowning Around in Third Grade

This is a great back to school math lesson. I like to take page 3, the blank puzzle, and enlarge it to be copied onto large construction paper. This gives the students room to write big and add pictures to each puzzle piece. I usually make my own math puzzle to share with the kids. I have included a digital sample puzzle, but of course they look better and much more creative when they are handwritten, with drawings added. Some groups are able to come up with 8 math facts about themselves, but in case your students need guidelines, there are directions included for each puzzle piece on page 2. My third graders are good at making up addition, subtraction, and expanded form math facts for their poster. You can use google to figure out how many days and months old you are. Older children are much better at being creative with their math facts and can include fractions, decimals, exponential notation, etc. When finished, these make a great math bulletin board to get the school year started!
